“I have been trying to teach myself Spanish, so I’ve been doing a Spanish word of the day,” said DeGeneres, 59. “So I thought I would teach you an English word!”
“Okay,” said Vergara, jokingly raising her eyebrows and pointing out, “I know English very well.”
First up, DeGeneres had Vergara, 45, pronounce the word “flabbergasted” — and the Colombian actress pulled it off in the perfect American accent.
“I have said that word before,” said Vergara proudly. “You see, my American English?”
“What about ‘discombobulated’?” DeGeneres asked.
Vergara paused and asked the host to repeat the word before blurting out similar-sounding gibberish as the audience roared with laughter.
“It’s because I’m nervous!” Vergara said. “That is not even a word. You’re just doing it to ruin my reputation.”
Vergara also opened up about posing nude for the cover of Women’s Health this summer, admitting to DeGeneres that she was “kind of nervous” beforehand and asked the photographer to send her inspiration for the shoot so she could practice posing.
“So the magazine sent these pictures of these beautiful, tiny, long models that covered their whole body with their arm,” Vergara said.
“And I’m trying these poses, and first of all, I do and one is here, and the other one is here,” she said. “So there was no covering anything with this stupid arm.”
Eventually, Vergara realized that particular pose just wasn’t going to work for her body.
“I was just trying to be creative, I was trying to be practical and solve the problem,” she said. “But then I said to them, ‘It’s impossible — we can’t do that. We have to figure out a way look decent, not pornographic.’ ”
The winning formula?
“It’s an arm and a hand and a very weird angle,” Vergara said. “Then you’re shaking, but you have to smile and look sexy. It takes a long time.”
